Ice Cream Sandwiches

We made ice cream sandwiches in food art! My unit decided to make strawberry ice cream and it was delicious! This was a very simple lab but the payoff was great! I would love to eat these again!

Fondant Cake

As one of our final projects in Food Art this year we all had to make a cake and then decorate it with fondant. Previously we learned to make different kinds of flowers with fondant. My best flower was the rose which I chose to decorate my cake with. I was aiming for an elegant and classy cake so I kept it simple with pink and red roses on one side with a few ivy leaves and the rest of the cake was a plain mint green. I was very proud of my cake at the end! I thought it looked pretty good.

Cake Pops

Cake Pops seem to be everywhere this season, and what a perfect lab to do in Food Art! My group chose a Swiss chocolate base which we then decorated with melted white candy melts and rainbow sprinkles. I found it very difficult to make the cake pops perfect spheres and to coat them with the melted candy melts evenly. I don't think I would ever have the patience to make these again!

Easter Egg Carrot Cake

As another Easter activity we made carrot cake in the shape of eggs in food art. We then used a variety of colours to decorate the egg shaped cakes as if they were Easter eggs. I chose quite vibrant colours to decorate my "eggs" as I thought they looked very cheerful and uplifting. I was quite happy with my final product which I turned into a cracked Easter egg.

Ukrainian Easter Eggs

We made Ukrainian Easter eggs in food art this year which was very exciting. I am part Ukrainian so I have done my share of decorating these finicky eggs before, and I must say that it never gets any easier! I went with a typical Ukrainian design that you would often see on many Easter eggs. Here was my final product:

Pulla

Pulla is a Finnish coffee bread. I'd never heard of it before we made it in class, but it is absolutely delicious! I have to say that I think the girls in our class had an advantage when it came to braiding the dough. The boys seemed slightly confused as to which strand to place where, but they got the hang of it. I loved this recipe and would definitely make it again.

Royal Icing flowers

To help us decorate cupcakes or cakes we learned to make different types of flowers with royal icing. It was very difficult to make a good consistency if icing to work with but once you got that it wasn't too difficult. I found the roses very pretty but overall I think the daffodils were the prettiest.
